Experiment Three: Reflection

On the whole, working on my third experiment has been such an enjoyable and valuable experience. When I first set out to begin sketching the different components of Experiment #3, I was concerned that I wasn’t prepared to implement the photo essay genre, and I wasn’t confident I would be satisfied with the final product. I am really happy to report at this point that my third experiment has truly exceeded my expectations. I very much enjoyed working with the photo essay genre and feel that I learned so much about this unique and powerful medium. Apart from that, as somebody who has a deep interest in our economy and the subject of the national debt, I believe I was able to learn a lot more about the topic myself and see it through a new lens. Although I don’t think I will choose Experiment #3 for my final project since I feel a little more excited about my previous two, I absolutely believe this experiment was a success.

In my view, one of the things that worked really well throughout the process of my third experiment was learning about the genre of the photo essay. As I mentioned earlier, I had a limited understanding of the photo essay prior to this experiment. I am really happy with how much I learned about the photo essay and how smoothly I was able to implement it to fit my own writing interests and goals. This has really been an inspiring process, and I am looking forward to using my knowledge of the photo essay later in my college career and beyond.

While I succeeded in navigating the photo essay genre as a whole, there are some things that didn’t go as smoothly. One thing that I found a bit difficult was deciding which photos to choose. As my genre research taught me, there are countless considerations to make when selecting the proper photographs for a photo essay. I am confident in the selections I made and feel they relate very well to the subject matter, although this process was not as easy as I anticipated. Another struggle I encountered was drafting the captions for each photograph. I am happy with how my captions turned out but wasn’t initially sure whether they were too long or too short, or if they were written properly. My genre research helped clarify this for me.

In sum, Experiment #3 was a really enjoyable project for me to work on. I feel that I have come out of this experiment with a lot of knowledge about a new medium of writing that I will definitely keep in mind for the future.
