This semester, we began each class period in the Gateway with a five-minute short write. I provided copies of several of my short writing samples below:

February 16, 2021: Where Is?

Where is summer? I woke up this morning to a thick blanket of white over everything in sight. My front door is barricaded with fluff; the roads have been turned into dangerous ice-skating rinks not suitable for vehicle travel. The sun is hidden behind a dim layer of iron gray, and the national news doesn’t bring me any comfort. They say sub-zero temperatures stretch all the way down to Texas. I checked out a national temperature map, and the only place above 50 degrees is Miami. We need summer, and we need it now.

February 23, 2021: Looking Back

Vintage Alarm Clocks

Looking back at the last 12 months, it has no doubt been a long year. It is now nearly a year since March 11, 2020, the day dorms closed across campus and distraught students fled home to all corners of the country and world to do classes over Zoom. Almost 365 days later, it’s hard to believe that little to nothing has changed. True, there is a big light at the end of the tunnel, but with continuing uncertainty, it’s still hard to find.

March 30, 2021: Puppy

I’ve never had a puppy or any other animal as a pet, outside of a few goldfish a long time ago. Nevertheless, my family and I always have company in our backyard from deer visitors. It is unheard of to go a full day without seeing a deer or two, or four or even eight. In fact, there were ten running around for an hour the other day. Sometimes, there will be a young deer just laying underneath a tree for hours with a relaxed look on its face. Of course, having lots of deer in the back hasn’t always been easy. One time, I accidentally scared a fawn hidden behind a bush when walking outside on a warm summer morning. The fawn, which must have only been a few days old, bolted away and nearly made it into our house. I’m not sure how we would have gotten it out, had it made it through the door. Luckily, we closed it just in time.
